Public Safety

During question period on public safety, the Conservatives raised a home invasion in Toronto in which a father and his two daughters were shot, saying violent crime is out of control and calling on the government to pass Conservative bills that would strengthen self-defence laws and protect families in their homes. The Liberals called the incident tragic, noted the Toronto Police Service is still investigating, said they want people who break into homes caught and sentenced, pointed to changes they have made to the Criminal Code, and said enforcement is the responsibility of local police and provincial courts.Written by AI from the debate. Mr. Speaker, there was heartbreaking news out of Toronto this morning. Three masked suspects armed with handguns and a hammer forced their way into a family’s home, and a father and his two daughters were shot. This is the kind of chaos that Canadians are facing. It is time for the Liberals to pass our stand on guard act and our safe at home bill that would strengthen protections for Canadians by strengthening our self-defence laws and ensuring that we have laws on the books that protect families in their own home. Will the Liberals pass these laws so we can protect Canadians and restore safe homes, yes or no?

“This home invasion is tragic, and the police are still investigating it. We want criminals who break into homes to be caught and sentenced. That is why we made many changes to the Criminal Code. It is the job of local police and provincial courts to enforce the law.”

Mr. Speaker, the incident referenced by the member is a very tragic news story that I learned about today as well. I hear that the Toronto Police Service has an ongoing investigation. We are waiting for the investigation’s findings. Of course, we are adamant about making sure that criminals who enter anyone’s home are caught and appropriately sentenced. That is why we have made an unprecedented number of changes to the Criminal Code of Canada. It is the job of local police and the local courts that are provincially run to now—
