Marine Transportation

During question period on marine transportation, the NDP raised federal funding for ferries, saying BC Ferries receives about $1.63 per passenger in federal support compared with roughly $291 per passenger in Atlantic Canada, and asking for fair, long-term funding for British Columbia’s ferries. A Liberal minister replied that the member’s letter on the issue had been received and said the government looks forward to conversations about continued investment in British Columbia and Canada.Written by AI from the debate. “The federal government gives Atlantic Canada about $291 per ferry passenger, but gives BC Ferries only $1.63. I want the government to give British Columbia fair, long-term funding for its ferries.”

Mr. Speaker, ferries are essential highways for coastal communities. Of course we support strong federal funding for ferry services in Atlantic Canada. However, BC Ferries receives only $1.63 per passenger in federal operational support, compared to about $291 per passenger in Atlantic Canada. Temporary relief measures and repayable loans for B.C. cannot replace fair, long-term federal operational support. When will the Liberal government finally modernize these outdated agreements and provide fair support for British Columbia and BC Ferries?

Mr. Speaker, we thank the member for his advocacy for British Columbia. I am aware that the letter he sent to the department has been received. We are looking forward to having conversations about how we can continue to invest in British Columbia and how we can continue to invest in Canada. We were elected with a mandate to build Canada strong, and we will proceed with doing that.
