Health

During oral questions on health, the topic was a part of the government’s economic update bill (Bill C-30) dealing with pesticide regulation, which would let the government allow a pest control product’s use for emergencies on grounds like economic or food security even after the Health Minister has decided its environmental risks are unacceptable. Elizabeth May of the Green Party said this division would amount to the largest rollback of health and environmental protection in pesticide regulation in Canada’s history, said the industry had not asked for it, and asked the Prime Minister to explain why the government was doing it. Health Minister Marjorie Michel replied that protecting Canadians’ health and safety is the government’s priority, and that it can do so while also working closely with the agricultural sector on growing the economy and food production.Written by AI from the debate. “This bill rolls back health and environmental protections on pesticides more than ever before. Not even the industry asked for this. I want the Prime Minister to explain why the government is doing it.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, division 8 of Bill C-30, with only three hours of debate in this place before time allocation, represents the single largest rollback of health and environmental protection in the regulation of pesticides in the history of this country. I ask the government, I ask the Prime Minister, where did the pressure come from for this rollback? I am reliably informed that even industry did not ask for it. Why is the government doing this to our environment and our health?

Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, as I said yesterday, the priority of the Canadian government and the Department of Health is to protect the health and safety of Canadians. However, I repeat, we can walk and chew gum at the same time. We are also dealing with the agricultural sector, with which we are working closely. That said, we will always take steps to protect the health of Canadians as we develop our economy and food sovereignty.
