Forestry Industry

During question period, members discussed the announced idling of the AV Nackawic pulp mill in New Brunswick, which is putting hundreds of workers out of jobs heading into Christmas. Richard Bragdon (Conservative) described the impact on mill families in his hometown, including a young mother worried about making ends meet, and said Canadian forestry mills face competitive disadvantages from tariffs, regulations, and the industrial carbon price; he asked the government to remove those barriers and work with him to protect workers. Wayne Long (Liberal) said the government’s thoughts were with the affected workers and families, noted a recent meeting with the member, and said the government is working with the province, industry, and community leaders to find a solution.Written by AI from the debate. “A mill in my hometown is shutting down, and hundreds of people are losing their jobs right before Christmas. I want the government to work with me to help these workers and protect their livelihoods.”

Mr. Speaker, I rise with a heavy heart. The announced idling of the AV Nackawic mill is putting hundreds of hard-working Canadians out of a job heading into Christmas. This is not the first time my hometown has experienced this. My father worked at the same mill for over 50 years and experienced a closure in 2005. I am receiving calls from families wondering how they will make their house payments, keep their kids in sports or put food on the table. Will the government commit to working with me to do everything necessary to secure the livelihoods of my home community?

“We care about the workers hurt by this mill closure. We are working with the province and the industry, and we will keep meeting to try to find a solution.”

Mr. Speaker, I want to thank the member for his leadership on this file. Our thoughts are with the workers and their families at this difficult time. As the member knows, we had a productive meeting last week. We are working with the province and with industry on the matter. He and I will continue to meet, and we will try to find a solution. We will meet with all relevant people. We are going to keep fighting for the workers affected by this closure.

“Forestry mills are struggling and workers are losing their jobs because of tariffs, too many rules, and the industrial carbon tax. I want the government to get rid of these barriers so mills can stay open.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, a young lady who contacted me was wondering how her family was going to make ends meet, let alone provide a Christmas for her children with her husband now facing unemployment. We know that forestry mills are facing huge competitive disadvantages here in Canada, namely because of tariffs, over-regulation and the industrial carbon tax, which costs the mill in Nackawic over $2 million a year. Will the government commit to removing the barriers for our businesses so that this young lady and many others like her can have some hope for a brighter future?

Mr. Speaker, again, I applaud the member’s leadership on this issue. Our thoughts are certainly with the workers and their families who are affected by the closure of AV Nackawic. We are going to work with the province. We are working with leadership in the community to find a solution. We are going to keep fighting for the workers affected by this terrible closure.
