Forestry Industry

During question period, members discussed the announced idling of the AV Nackawic pulp mill in New Brunswick, which is putting hundreds of workers out of jobs heading into Christmas. Richard Bragdon (Conservative) described the impact on mill families in his hometown, including a young mother worried about making ends meet, and said Canadian forestry mills face competitive disadvantages from tariffs, regulations, and the industrial carbon price; he asked the government to remove those barriers and work with him to protect workers. Wayne Long (Liberal) said the government’s thoughts were with the affected workers and families, noted a recent meeting with the member, and said the government is working with the province, industry, and community leaders to find a solution.Written by AI from the debate. Mr. Speaker, I want to thank the member for his leadership on this file. Our thoughts are with the workers and their families at this difficult time. As the member knows, we had a productive meeting last week. We are working with the province and with industry on the matter. He and I will continue to meet, and we will try to find a solution. We will meet with all relevant people. We are going to keep fighting for the workers affected by this closure.

Mr. Speaker, again, I applaud the member’s leadership on this issue. Our thoughts are certainly with the workers and their families who are affected by the closure of AV Nackawic. We are going to work with the province. We are working with leadership in the community to find a solution. We are going to keep fighting for the workers affected by this terrible closure.
