Public Safety

During question period on public safety, Conservative MP Arpan Khanna said Liberal bail laws let repeat violent offenders back on the street too easily, citing a victim in his riding who feels restricted while the accused remains free, and pointed to shootings of police officers and public places as evidence the government’s approach is not working. He asked the government to change the bail system and keep violent offenders in jail. Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree responded that the government has made significant changes since taking office, citing legislation on bail and sentencing and victims’ rights, funding for police and border officers, and statistics showing declines in extortion, firearm offences, homicides, child sexual abuse offences and car theft.Written by AI from the debate. Mr. Speaker, since taking office last year, we have undertaken unprecedented amounts of legislative change to ensure the safety and security of Canadians. Let me just enumerate some of them: Bill C-14 strengthens bail as well as sentencing. Bill C-16 ensures that victims’ rights are protected. Bill C-9 ensures the safety and security of communities. In addition, we are investing in law enforcement as well as the Canada Border Services Agency. We will do everything we can to ensure the safety and security of all Canadians.
