The Economy

During question period on the economy, a Liberal member asked what the government is doing to help families cope with the rising cost of groceries and everyday essentials ahead of Thanksgiving. A Liberal minister replied that the government is helping Canadians through measures such as housing, lower gas costs, child care, and dental care, and pointed to a new grocery payment going to about 12 million people, including $340 for a family of four, which the government says will lift 67,000 people out of poverty.Written by AI from the debate. “Food and daily essentials cost a lot right now. What is our government doing to make life more affordable for families?”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, Thanksgiving is fast approaching. As families in Longueuil—Saint-Hubert head to the grocery store to prepare for large family gatherings, they are looking for extra support to help them cope with the cost of food and other everyday essentials. As Canadians and Quebeckers, we have many reasons to be grateful. As families across the country prepare to celebrate, what measures is our government taking to make life more affordable?

“Our government helps Canadians with housing, cheaper gas, child care, and dental care. Today, we are giving grocery money to 12 million people, including $340 for a family of four. This will lift 67,000 people out of poverty.”

Mr. Speaker, I would like to thank my colleague for his excellent question. It is true that one of the government’s key roles is to ensure that each and every citizen can reach their full potential. The government can help the people, whether it is through social housing, the suspension of the gas tax, the Canada child benefit or the Canadian dental care plan. Today, on October 5, the Canada groceries and essentials benefit that we introduced is being deposited into the accounts of 12 million Canadians. This amounts to $340 for a family of four. This measure reduces poverty for 67,000 Canadians, lifting them out of poverty. This is essential, and I thank my colleague for his work and support.
