Business of Supply

A supply-day debate on a Conservative motion for what members called an emergency diesel relief plan: cutting taxes on diesel and making it easier to build energy projects, including more Canadian refining capacity, with the aim of lowering costs for farmers, truckers and families. Conservatives said federal taxes and policy are driving up gas and grocery prices, and noted they have proposed fuel-tax relief several times before. Liberals pointed to the government’s existing fuel tax break and other affordability measures, saying Canada cannot control global prices, that relief should be immediate rather than long-term, and that energy development and clean alternatives can go ahead together. The Bloc Québécois proposed refunding the diesel excise tax to businesses when prices spike, paid for by ending oil and gas subsidies, and questioned subsidies to that sector; the NDP called for taxing record oil and gas company profits. Some members also traded remarks about past promises and their own ridings.Written by AI from the debate. Updated .

“The Liberals and Conservatives keep arguing about who cut gas taxes, but neither talks about huge oil and gas profits. When will the government tax these extra profits?”
Official Hansard

Madam Speaker, all day, we hear the Conservatives and Liberals fight over who brought down the prices in terms of taxes on fuel. However, we are not hearing about the record profits from big oil and gas companies. They are posting record profits. There is literally no threshold on how much money these companies can make before the Liberals bring in an excess profit tax. When will the Liberals bring in an excess profit tax on big oil and gas?
