Taxation

Question period focused on diesel and fuel prices and federal fuel taxes. Conservative members said diesel prices had risen sharply over the past year, raising costs for farmers, truckers and families, and asked the government to cut federal taxes on diesel, including the industrial carbon tax, the clean fuel standard charge and the GST on diesel, and to support a Conservative motion to lower fuel costs. Government members said fuel prices were being driven up by world events affecting global markets, and pointed to steps already taken, including suspending the federal carbon price and the federal fuel excise tax, which they said had lowered diesel prices by 25 cents a litre, along with tax cuts and grocery-related payments. Liberal members invited Conservatives to vote for Bill C-38, a bill to extend the suspension of the federal fuel excise tax, which Conservatives had not supported so far.Written by AI from the debate. “Wars around the world are driving up fuel prices. We cut taxes on diesel by 25 cents a litre since September to help. We are also building energy projects so Canada relies less on global fuel markets, and I want the Conservatives to support that work.”

Mr. Speaker, Canadians know that war has driven up fuel prices around the world. That is why we suspended the federal carbon price and the federal excise tax on diesel. Since last September, we have taken 25¢ off a litre of diesel. We continue to respond by making Canada more energy-secure and less beholden to global energy price volatility by building the energy infrastructure we need. We would really like the Conservatives to help us do that as well.

Tim Hodgson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources

Liberal
“I want the member to vote with us to extend the fuel tax cut.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, I would invite the member opposite to join us in voting for Bill C-38 to extend the excise tax reduction.

Heath MacDonald, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food

Liberal
“High diesel prices are a world problem, not just a Canadian one. Our government has already paused the fuel tax and cut the carbon tax to help Canadians and farmers. We will keep working hard for our farmers.”

Mr. Speaker, everybody is familiar with the story of the Strait of Hormuz and what it is doing to the world, including global market prices on diesel. This is not just a Canadian problem. It is a world problem. We suspended the excise tax. We also cut the carbon tax when we were first elected, a promise we made to Canadians across this country and to farmers. We will continue working hard for farmers as we go forward.

Wayne Long, Secretary of State (Canada Revenue Agency and Financial Institutions)

Liberal
“We are already helping Canadians with the cost of living. We cut taxes for 22 million people. We paused the fuel tax to save drivers 10 cents a litre at the pump. We also sent out payments yesterday to help people buy food and essentials, which will lift 77,000 Canadians out of poverty.”

Mr. Speaker, on this side of the House, we are going to continue to focus on affordability. We cut taxes for 22 million Canadians. We just paused the federal fuel excise tax, saving Canadians 10¢ a litre when they fill up. If we combine that with the consumer carbon tax, it is 28¢ in savings. Yesterday, Canadians received their groceries and essentials benefit. That benefit will lift 77,000 Canadians out of poverty.

Kody Blois, Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister

Liberal
“Our government is helping people with high costs. We gave families extra money for groceries yesterday. We also have a bill right now to keep pausing the federal tax on fuel. I want the Conservatives to vote for it instead of ignoring farmers.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, respectfully, I reject the entire premise of the question. We have been taking action on supporting affordability across this country. We have before the House right now the ability to extend the federal fuel excise tax removal on gasoline and diesel. The hon. member and her party have the opportunity to support the government’s initiative in that matter. Yesterday, the groceries and essentials benefit, which is providing recipients somewhere between $200 and $300 per family, found its way to Canadian families. We know there are challenges happening around the world. The government is taking the initiatives it can to be able to support Canadians. We would certainly like the Conservatives to join that effort. The member is from Pembroke. There are lots of farmers in Pembroke. We have a lot to say for farmers. The member ran on a platform in April 2025 with not a single thing to say for Canadian farmers. That is the record of the Conservative Party.
