Taxation

Question period focused on diesel and fuel prices and federal fuel taxes. Conservative members said diesel prices had risen sharply over the past year, raising costs for farmers, truckers and families, and asked the government to cut federal taxes on diesel, including the industrial carbon tax, the clean fuel standard charge and the GST on diesel, and to support a Conservative motion to lower fuel costs. Government members said fuel prices were being driven up by world events affecting global markets, and pointed to steps already taken, including suspending the federal carbon price and the federal fuel excise tax, which they said had lowered diesel prices by 25 cents a litre, along with tax cuts and grocery-related payments. Liberal members invited Conservatives to vote for Bill C-38, a bill to extend the suspension of the federal fuel excise tax, which Conservatives had not supported so far.Written by AI from the debate. “Diesel prices are up 71 percent from last year. This makes everything more expensive for farmers, truckers, and families. I want the Prime Minister to cut all federal taxes on diesel to save Canadians money.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, for 11 years, Liberal taxes and red tape blocked pipelines and new refineries from moving and producing Canadian fuel. Canada is the world’s fourth-largest oil producer, but diesel hit $2.63 a litre last month, up 71% from a year ago. When diesel costs more, farmers, truckers, builders and families all pay more for everything. Canadians need lower taxes, not more excuses. Will the Prime Minister support our emergency fuel relief plan and scrap all federal taxes on diesel to save Canadians money?

“High fuel prices are the government's fault, not wars in other countries. People are paying up to $240 more to fill their tanks. The government could cut carbon taxes and the GST on diesel right now. When will they cut these taxes so farmers and families can afford fuel and food?”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, he can tell that to the Canadians paying up to $240 more each time they fill up. That is the cost of Liberal failure. The Prime Minister cannot blame wars abroad for taxes at home. Liberals can scrap the industrial carbon tax, the fuel standard tax and the GST on diesel today, but instead of relief, Canadians get Liberal talk and no results. Farmers cannot fuel tractors with Liberal excuses, and families cannot eat announcements. When will the out-of-touch Liberals cut diesel taxes so Canadians can afford to drive and feed themselves?

Conservative
“High fuel costs make farming and shipping food more expensive, which raises grocery prices for everyone. I want the government to support our motion to lower fuel costs.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, farmers in Haldimand—Norfolk grow the food that Canadians depend on, but that food must be planted, it must be transported and it must be harvested. Every step of the way depends on fuel. When diesel prices rise, farmers and truckers pay more, and those costs are transferred to consumers at the grocery store checkout line. Our Conservative motion would provide emergency fuel relief and bring those costs down. Will the government support our motion and give farmers—

“I want the government to support our motion to lower fuel costs. Life is too expensive, and families in my riding cannot afford food. Our plan would actually save people money.”

Mr. Speaker, the Liberals are all talk and no results. Our Conservative motion would save families money. After 10 years, Canadians need relief, not another Liberal promise. Families cannot put a press release on the dinner table. In Haldimand—Norfolk, I represent farmers who produce the food and families who can no longer afford to buy it. Will the government support our motion for emergency fuel relief, or will it keep Canadians lining up at food banks just to survive?

Cheryl Gallant, Algonquin—Renfrew—Pembroke

Conservative
“High fuel prices make everything that is shipped cost more, and Canadians are struggling to buy what they need. I want the Liberals to vote with us to cut taxes on fuel.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, higher fuel prices are official Liberal Party policy. Higher diesel prices mean that everything that moves by truck, train or cargo ship costs more. Canadians are suffering due to Liberal inaction. They cannot feed their kids press releases. Just like with the carbon tax and the gas tax, the Liberals will not do anything for Canadians until the polls shift. Will the Liberals stop wasting time and join us in passing the emergency fuel relief plan?
