Finance

During question period on finance, the Conservative House leader asked repeatedly about the Prime Minister’s newly announced $2-billion heat pump rebate program, saying the Prime Minister’s personal investments in Brookfield, which owns heat pump companies, created a conflict of interest, and asking how much money the Prime Minister and Brookfield would make from it. A Liberal member responded that the program would fund rebates for one million home retrofits, lower emissions, and save families up to $1,400 a year as part of addressing affordability. Part of the exchange went to a Liberal member first offering House congratulations to Toronto writer Anne Carson on winning the Nobel Prize in Literature before questions resumed.Written by AI from the debate. “The Prime Minister announced a $2-billion heat pump program that helps companies owned by Brookfield. This is a clear conflict of interest. How much money will Brookfield and the Prime Minister make from taxpayers?”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, in another convenient example of public policy aligning with Brookfield’s strategy of tax dollars being used to limit private risk and profit, the Prime Minister announced a $2-billion heat pump rebate program today. Let us play a game. Trane, which is owned by Brookfield, finances and installs heat pumps. Enercare is owned by Brookfield, and it finances and installs heat pumps. The conflict of interest is so blatantly obvious, but what is surprising is the Prime Minister is not even hiding it anymore. How much do the Prime Minister and Brookfield stand to make off the backs of taxpayers?

“The Prime Minister has investments in Brookfield, which owns heat pump companies. Today's $2-billion government announcement will make his investments worth more. I want him to tell us how much money he and Brookfield will make from taxpayers, and how this is not corrupt.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, it is not surprising that he does not want to answer these questions, but maybe he will answer this one. The Prime Minister knows exactly what is in his portfolio. Trane heat pumps and Enercare are owned by Brookfield. He stands to make millions in deferred stock units, stock options and carried interest. Today’s $2-billion taxpayer-funded announcement increases the value of his personal assets and Brookfield’s. I ask again, how much do the Prime Minister and Brookfield stand to make off the backs of taxpayers with today’s announcement? Maybe he will answer this question: How is that not corrupt?
