Finance

During question period on finance, the Conservative House leader asked repeatedly about the Prime Minister’s newly announced $2-billion heat pump rebate program, saying the Prime Minister’s personal investments in Brookfield, which owns heat pump companies, created a conflict of interest, and asking how much money the Prime Minister and Brookfield would make from it. A Liberal member responded that the program would fund rebates for one million home retrofits, lower emissions, and save families up to $1,400 a year as part of addressing affordability. Part of the exchange went to a Liberal member first offering House congratulations to Toronto writer Anne Carson on winning the Nobel Prize in Literature before questions resumed.Written by AI from the debate. Mr. Speaker, I know we will get to many questions today, but I do want to extend the greetings and the congratulations of the entire House. It does not happen every day that Canada welcomes a brand new Nobel laureate, this time in literature. We congratulate Anne Carson of Toronto, a proud graduate of the University of Toronto, author of over 20 books, a 2005 member of the Order of Canada and a collaborator with the Rheostatics. I want to congratulate Anne Carson, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Mr. Speaker, our government is focused on addressing affordability for Canadians. That is right. Today, the Prime Minister announced that we will provide $2 billion for the national heat pump rebate, which will deliver one million home retrofits across Canada. This will save families up to $1,400 per year. We will continue to put forward measures that address the affordability challenges Canadians are facing, while lowering emissions at the same time— Some hon. members: Oh, oh!
