The Economy

During question period on the economy, members focused on affordability and the cost of living. A Conservative member said food, housing and everyday bills have become too expensive for many Canadians after eleven years of Liberal government, and asked the government to acknowledge this. A Liberal minister replied that the government has taken measures such as removing the excise tax on gasoline, launching a heat pump program, and expanding child care and food and housing supports, and said the Conservatives have voted against these measures rather than supporting them.Written by AI from the debate. “Under this Liberal government, food, housing, and bills cost too much. I want the government to admit that Canadians cannot afford to live after 11 years of their rule.”

Madam Speaker, Thanksgiving is supposed to be about sitting down with one’s family and being thankful for what one has. However, for far too many Canadians, that dinner table has become a place where they sit down and worry about how they are going to make ends meet. Under the Liberal government, groceries cost more, housing costs more and the bills keep piling up. Canadians do not need more talking points. They need results. Can the government finally admit that, after 11 years of Liberal rule, Canadians are facing an unprecedented affordability crisis?

Madam Speaker, if the Conservatives really cared about affordability, they would actually vote for affordability measures. We just took the excise tax off gas. The PBO says that is going to save the average family $276 a year. We just launched a heat pump program that will save an average family $1,400 a year. Will the Conservatives support that? No. Do they support child care? No. Do they support the national food program? No. Do they support the measures that we are taking to build affordable homes? The answer is no. In the member’s riding, we are supporting businesses and affordability. He should get on board.
