Justice

During question period on justice matters, a Conservative member asked whether the government would appeal a B.C. Supreme Court ruling that struck down the prohibition on possessing drugs for the purpose of trafficking, saying the deadline to appeal was approaching and that families wanted an answer; the member said the government had pointed to the Public Prosecution Service rather than giving a direct reply. Separately, a Liberal minister said the government disagreed with the Cowichan ruling and was appealing it, and that it would continue consulting with Indigenous communities and other groups during the appeal.Written by AI from the debate. “A court in British Columbia struck down the rule against having drugs to sell them. The deadline to challenge that ruling is coming soon. I want to know if the Attorney General will order an appeal to protect our community.”

Madam Speaker, two weeks ago, I asked whether the Liberals would appeal the B.C. Supreme Court ruling striking down the prohibition on possessing drugs for trafficking. They hide behind the Public Prosecution Service. The October 29 deadline is approaching, yet there is still no answer. Families in Richmond Centre—Marpole are concerned and want to ask if the Attorney General will use his statutory authority to direct the PPSC to file an appeal and protect their community, yes or no?

Madam Speaker, let us set the record straight. We have disagreed with the Cowichan ruling and we are appealing it. That member knows, as we have gotten up and said this a number of times. We are going to work with indigenous communities. We are going to talk to them. We are going to continue talking to the stakeholders, and we are going to continue to appeal this.
