“Thousands of newspapers and magazines in Canada and Europe want our governments to regulate online platforms and artificial intelligence. They want to protect independent news and make sure tech companies pay creators for their work. The Prime Minister must bring this up at the summit today.”
“Mr. Speaker, this morning, representatives of thousands of newspapers and magazines from both sides of the Atlantic wrote to Canada and the European Union. They are calling on them to use the upcoming summit as an opportunity to commit to regulating digital platforms and the use of AI. They are calling for the summit’s final statement to include “a firm, shared commitment to free, independent, pluralistic and sustainable media and reliable professional journalism, underpinned by enabling frameworks.” They also call on Canada and Europe to promote “a transparent AI ecosystem that respects intellectual property rights, supports licensing and appropriate remuneration, and enables creators, publishers and other cultural and creative businesses to control and realise the value of their works.” Canadian and European media are highlighting the most significant global challenges for the future of culture and news. The Prime Minister must raise these issues at the Canada-EU summit today.”
