International Trade

Question period focused on trade with the United States. Conservatives said the Prime Minister had promised to secure a deal with the Americans but none has materialized, noting job losses in Quebec, pressure on farmers and rural manufacturers, and asking whether the timing of a call to Donald Trump before by-elections was about jobs or politics. Liberals said they continue to support workers and businesses affected by U.S. tariffs, including firms in members’ own ridings, and that Canada walked away from talks rather than accept a bad deal; one minister also pointed to defence investments meeting NATO targets and supporting Canadian jobs.Written by AI from the debate. “The Prime Minister failed to get a good trade deal with the United States. Last week he said he could wait years to negotiate, but then he called Donald Trump right before calling by-elections. I want to know if he is negotiating to protect jobs or to help his party win.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, the Prime Minister promised a great deal with the United States, but there are no results. It is a total failure. Last week, the Prime Minister said that he could wait two or two and a half years before negotiating with the Americans. However, a few days ago, before calling the by-elections, who did he call? He called Donald Trump to negotiate. What a coincidence. It is déjà vu all over again. Is the Prime Minister negotiating to save jobs, or is he doing it to give the Liberals an advantage in the upcoming by-elections?

“The Prime Minister promised to get a trade deal with Donald Trump, but there is no deal. Businesses are paying the price, and Quebec has lost 130,000 jobs since January. I want to know if the Prime Minister will deliver the deal he promised.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, the Prime Minister was elected on a promise to save us from Mr. Trump. Where is the deal? There is no deal. All we get are promises and empty talk, never any results. Our businesses are paying the price for his failure. Quebec has lost 130,000 jobs since January. Will the Prime Minister succeed in delivering the deal he promised, or will he continue putting on a political spectacle?

“The Prime Minister promised he could make a trade deal with Donald Trump. He has not done it. The ongoing trade war is hurting our farmers and rural businesses, while costs keep going up. He has been in office 599 days. When will he finally deliver the deal he promised?”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, the Prime Minister got elected on the promise that he could do a deal with Trump. Instead of getting the deal done, the Prime Minister has been playing political theatre. First, he called six by-elections. Then he called Trump. All the while, the ongoing trade war is hurting rural manufacturers and farmers. Costs are going up, revenues are going down, and life is more unaffordable. The Prime Minister continues to use defence as a political pawn, which is making our military less capable and Canada more vulnerable. The Prime Minister has been in office 599 days. When will he finally get the deal he promised?
