Emergency Management

During question period on emergency management, members discussed a federal financing package of up to $2.5 billion for Alberta-based De Havilland to increase production of its water-bomber aircraft. Liberals said the investment would support the Canada-EU partnership announced by the government, help Canada and Europe fight wildfires, protect communities, and sustain thousands of jobs in Alberta’s aerospace sector. The minister noted the plan would roughly double production of the aircraft, and responded to opposition characterization of the European talks as political theatre by pointing to the Alberta jobs involved.Written by AI from the debate. “We are providing up to $2.5 billion to help De Havilland build more water bombers. Can the minister explain how this will help Canada and Europe fight wildfires and support thousands of jobs?”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, as part of the alliance for the future, the new partnership of nations that will leverage the strategic capabilities of Canada and the EU, our government is making a historic investment of up to $2.5 billion in financing for Alberta-based De Havilland to dramatically increase water bombing production capacity. Can the Minister of Emergency Management and Community Resilience tell the House how this financing will help European partners and Canada fight wildfires and support thousands of jobs across Canada?

“We are investing in Alberta's De Havilland so they can build twice as many water-bomber planes. This supports thousands of jobs and helps fight wildfires faster. The Leader of the Opposition called our talks with Europe political theatre, but Alberta workers would disagree.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, this is an investment in Canadian workers, Canadian aerospace ingenuity and community safety. It will help Alberta-based De Havilland double production of its iconic 515 water bombers, supporting thousands of great jobs in Alberta. This investment will get more of these life-saving aircraft where they are needed sooner. The Leader of the Opposition called the EU-Canada summit “political theatre”. I doubt the workers benefiting in Alberta, the province he represents, would agree.
