Pierre Poilievre, Leader of the Opposition

“The Prime Minister faked the immigration numbers. His government lost track of 300,000 people. He promised cuts, but he secretly brought in thousands more to help big corporations lower wages and raise rents. I want to know if he will fake the numbers again today.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, the Prime Minister cooked the books on immigration. He either lost count of, or lost altogether, 300,000 people in this country. Last year, the Liberals announced a cut in levels, only to bring in two backdoor programs to sneak in thousands more. Therefore, the population is again growing and levels are again at historic pre-Trudeau levels, or higher than pre-Trudeau levels. Will the Prime Minister cook the books again today to hide the number of people he is bringing in to profit big corporations with lower wages and higher rents?

Mark Carney, Prime Minister

Liberal
“Our population growth is at its lowest rate in decades. We have taken back control of immigration. The number of asylum seekers is down by 70%, temporary foreign workers are down by 60%, foreign students are down by 80%, and permanent residents are down by 100,000. We will share the next part of our plan today.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, the Leader of the Opposition needs a little work on his maths. The population growth in Canada was the lowest rate in decades. This government has taken back control of immigration. The number of asylum seekers is down by 70%; temporary foreign workers, down by 60%; foreign students, down by 80%; and permanent residents, down by 100,000. In a few hours, they will see the next phase of that immigration platform.

Pierre Poilievre, Leader of the Opposition

Conservative
“The government is using misleading numbers. Since the Conservatives were in power, the asylum backlog grew from 10,000 to 259,000, and temporary foreign workers went from 71,000 to 166,000. There are 700,000 people here on work permits while young Canadians cannot find jobs. I want the government to stop using misleading numbers and put Canadians first.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, that is cooking the books. When they compare themselves to insanity, it is insanity. He is comparing the numbers to the Trudeau-era levels. Let us compare them to the Conservative government. The asylum claimants backlog is up from 10,000 to 259,000, a 2,500% increase. The number of temporary foreign workers is up to 166,000 from 71,000, a 130% increase. The number of temporary residents is up 300% and he has 700,000 people here on work permits, even though there are thousands of youth who cannot find jobs. Will he stop cooking the books, and put Canadians first?

Mr. Speaker, I am not comparing myself to insanity. I am comparing myself to conspiracy. We have taken back control of immigration. The number of non-permanent residents has slowed from over 7% to just above 5%. We believe in this country. We are building Canada strong.
