“The government's new job numbers show its policies are failing. Unemployment is rising, youth unemployment is high, and the country lost over 50,000 private sector jobs last month. The government's budget does almost nothing to help people find work and ignores our ideas to help jobs and families.”
“Mr. Speaker, yesterday, our troubles seemed so far away, but now it looks as though they are here to stay. The costly credit card budget told us about the government’s aspirations, but today’s job numbers reveal the results. The job numbers are the report card on the government’s performance. Unemployment is up 6.7% and youth unemployment jumped to 13.7%. Canada lost over 50,000 private sector jobs in the last month alone. That is over 50,000 private sector jobs in one month. Perhaps the most troubling is that the percentage of unemployed people who are finding work continues to decline. Less than 20% of unemployed people found a job in the last month. Almost 30% of Canadians are living in a household that has difficulty meeting their financial needs. The budget contained almost no measures on employment and no response to constructive, Conservative proposals on jobs and families, and now we are seeing more job losses. Yesterday, we got the rhetoric. Today, we got the results. How we long for yesterday.”
