Indigenous Affairs

During Question Period on Indigenous Affairs, members discussed how budget 2026 addresses First Nations communities. The Conservatives cited the death of Miranda Mamakwa after the non-insured health benefits program failed to arrange her medical travel, and said the budget does not fix medical travel costs, doctor shortages in remote communities, or high living costs, and that housing funds are frozen or cut, amounting to few homes per First Nation per year against the Prime Minister’s promise to end homelessness. The Liberals replied that the budget invests over $3 billion in Indigenous health care, plus education and infrastructure, and commits $32 billion over ten years to First Nations housing and infrastructure, which they said is substantially more than past federal spending.Written by AI from the debate. Mr. Speaker, budget 2026 answers the call, with historic long-term investments that reflect the priorities of communities, from education and health care to essential infrastructure and supports. Healthy people are the foundation of strong communities, so budget 2026 invests over $3 billion to support access to essential health care and strengthen public health in indigenous communities. This is one of the many ways that we are supporting reconciliation and indigenous priorities in this budget.

“We are spending $32 billion over 10 years on housing and infrastructure for First Nations. This is 60% more money than the federal government has spent on First Nations infrastructure since 2015. It gives these communities the stability to build for the future.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, I am very glad that the member, who I work with on committee, brings up the question of housing. With budget 2026, we are committing $32 billion over the next 10 years for housing and infrastructure so that first nations communities have the stability they need today to build the stronger communities of tomorrow. This single commitment represents 60% more than all federal funding invested in first nations infrastructure since 2015. This is part of our government’s plan to give first nations communities the certainty to think big and the stability to build for future generations.
