Public Services and Procurement

In members’ statements under Public Services and Procurement, Conservative MP Michael Cooper raised a $2.3-billion contract awarded to Telesat, saying the Prime Minister’s account of his involvement has changed over time and that the Telesat CEO is a close personal friend of the Prime Minister. He argued that if the Prime Minister discussed the matter it would be illegal, and if he did not, he failed to formally recuse himself as required, and he called on the Prime Minister to say what he did.Written by AI from the debate. “The Prime Minister gave a $2.3-billion contract to Telesat, which is run by his close personal friend. His story about this keeps changing. He says he did not make the decision, but he will not say if he discussed it. If he discussed it, that was illegal. If he did not, he broke the law by not officially removing himself from the file. I want him to tell the truth about what he did.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, the Prime Minister’s story keeps changing in his role in awarding a $2.3-billion contract to Telesat. The Prime Minister is in a blatant conflict of interest because the CEO of Telesat is none other than one of his closest personal friends. The Prime Minister initially claimed that he had not discussed the contract with anyone in government, but yesterday his story changed. Yesterday, he said he was not part of the decision, but refused to say if he was part of the discussion. If he was part of the discussion, then that is illegal, and if he really was not involved, why is it that the Prime Minister has failed to issue the public declaration of recusal required by law? We have had enough of the obfuscation, enough of the weasel words. The Prime Minister needs to come clean on Telesat.
