Steel and Aluminum Industry

During question period, members raised the impact of U.S. tariffs on Canada’s steel and aluminum industry. Jason Groleau of the Conservatives said the Prime Minister failed in trade talks with the Americans, that tariffs of up to 100% put over 3,000 jobs in Beauce at risk and that 350 Stelco workers had lost their jobs, and he called on the government to take action to protect workers. Mélanie Joly of the Liberals replied that the government is in contact with companies including Canam, offers support programs and funding, and has changed purchasing rules so defence contracts and other sectors must use Canadian steel. Groleau answered that Liberal policies are driving up operating costs for businesses in his riding by millions of dollars and that Conservatives want to help businesses save money. Joly responded that the U.S. imposed the tariffs and that the member should speak out against the U.S. rather than attack the government, adding that she would support projects in his area.Written by AI from the debate. “The Prime Minister failed in trade talks with the Americans and hurt our steel industry. High tariffs now put over 3,000 jobs at risk in Beauce, and 350 steel workers have already lost their jobs. I want the Prime Minister to take real action to protect these workers instead of making empty promises.”

Mr. Speaker, the Liberal Prime Minister failed in the trade talks with the Americans. The Liberals have completely abandoned Canada’s steel industry. Today, steel is being hit with tariffs of up to 100%. In Beauce alone, that represents over 3,000 jobs that are at risk. Just ask the 350 Stelco employees who lost their jobs. We are talking about 350 jobs that have been lost. That is the result of Liberal inaction. Steel workers and their families are worried. When will the Prime Minister reassure them by taking action rather than making empty promises?

“We are taking action to help our steel industry. We are talking with businesses, giving them funding, and running support programs. We also changed our buying rules so that our defence contracts and other supported sectors must use Canadian steel.”

Mr. Speaker, we are taking action. We are in contact with several companies in my colleague’s riding of Beauce, including Canam, because we believe it is important to support our businesses. We have a wide range of support programs for businesses and we have already provided funding to various businesses. In the meantime, we have changed our procurement policies to say that domestically sourced steel must be used in all of our defence contracts and in all the support we provide to various companies, whether in the auto or aerospace sectors.

“Liberal policies are driving up costs for businesses in my riding. Local companies are facing millions of dollars in extra expenses. Conservatives want to help these businesses save money, and the government should stop making things harder for them.”

Mr. Speaker, businesses in the Beauce region have nothing to learn from Liberal ministers. The only thing more costly than a tariff is a Liberal minister who thinks they know more about business than entrepreneurs do. That is what is really costly. While they do nothing more than talk, operating costs are skyrocketing. Take Structure SBL, for example, which is facing an additional $4 million in costs. Camnor is facing an additional $1.5 million in costs per month. Conservatives want to help companies save money. Why are the Liberals doing the opposite?

“The United States put these tariffs in place, and they are hurting people. The member across the way should speak out against the U.S. instead of attacking us. Our government will support projects in his area to help the people there.”

Mr. Speaker, while my colleague is busy playing politics and grandstanding, I am looking forward to working with him and getting down to business. The reality is that there are people right now who are being affected by the tariffs. First of all, it would be tremendously helpful if my colleague would speak out against the tariffs, because the tariffs are being imposed by the U.S. government. Unfortunately, he seems to be overlooking that fact. Second, we are going to work on projects in his riding, because, of course, we will be there for the people of Beauce.
