“I want to honour Dr. Anas Al-Kassem. When war broke out in Syria, he helped create a group to send medicine and equipment to bombed hospitals. He also went to Syria around 20 times to operate on hundreds of wounded people.”
“Mr. Speaker, I want to acknowledge the tireless work of Dr. Anas Al-Kassem. A surgeon, Dr. Al-Kassem came to Canada to complete his medical residency. When he was about to return to Syria in 2011, war broke out in his country. He then decided he could be more useful to Syrians by organizing relief efforts from Canada. Along with two colleagues, he founded UOSSM, the Union of Medical Care and Relief Organizations, with the goal of providing much-needed medicine and equipment to hospitals under constant bombing and overwhelmed with a war that went on for 15 years. He personally carried out around 20 humanitarian missions in Syria, operating on hundreds of trauma patients at Bab-al Hawa and many other underground hospitals, even as doctors and medical staff were being targeted by the Bashar al-Assad government. Dr. Al-Kassem is a great humanitarian and a true Canadian hero.”
