The Economy

In the member statements portion of the sitting, the topic of the economy was raised by a Conservative member, who said the government has not kept spending under control and that Canadians are facing higher costs, higher interest rates and increased food bank use, with a record deficit amid U.S. tariffs. He said Conservatives will use the upcoming budget to push for debt reduction, lower fuel taxes and removal of the clean fuel standard tax. This was the sole statement on the topic, so no other party’s position was recorded.Written by AI from the debate. Updated .

“The Prime Minister broke his promises to keep spending under control and make life affordable. The government is running a record deficit, and Canadians are facing higher costs, higher interest rates, and record food bank use. Many people cannot afford groceries. In the upcoming budget, Conservatives will push the government to cut the debt, lower fuel taxes, and get rid of the clean fuel standard tax.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, the Prime Minister came to power promising affordability and responsible spending. Twenty months later, Canadians are paying the price for his broken promises. Amid economic uncertainty and U.S. tariffs, the Liberals are only making things worse. The government is spending money at a record pace and running the largest deficit outside of the COVID pandemic in Canadian history. What are Canadians getting in return? Higher costs for everything, interest rates hikes and record food bank use. The Salvation Army reports that nearly one in three Canadians is skipping and reducing meals because they cannot afford groceries, while half are dipping into their savings just to cover basic needs. Conservatives will scrutinize Thursday’s federal budget and fight for measures that will save Canadians money, protect jobs, put Canada first and reward hard work. That means reducing the debt and deficit, extending fuel tax relief and permanently scrapping the clean fuel standard tax. Canadians need relief, not more Liberal broken promises.
