The Environment

During Question Period on the environment, Elizabeth May of the Green Party asked whether the government had consulted scientists before choosing a pipeline route she said runs through sensitive marine areas on the B.C. coast, including the Salish Sea, contrary to a press release saying the route avoids such areas. Liberal minister Julie Dabrusin replied that the government takes ocean and nature protection seriously, pointing to the creation of the Great Bear Sea national marine conservation area reserve with six First Nations, an oil tanker ban, and ongoing work to protect more ocean areas.Written by AI from the debate. “The Prime Minister says this pipeline route avoids sensitive areas, but it actually goes right through our most sensitive marine habitats and salmon waters in B.C. Did the government talk to any scientists before making this decision?”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, the October 1 press release from the Prime Minister says that the pipeline will follow a southern route that “avoids highly sensitive ecosystems”. Is the government actually unaware that the pipeline route plows through the most sensitive marine areas on the B.C. coast: the Salish Sea, the Gulf Islands marine national park, the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve, the Boundary Bay protected Ramsar site, Roberts Bank and on and on, the most sensitive Fraser River salmon habitat? Did the government talk to any scientists before making this flawed decision?

“Our government protects oceans and nature. We helped create a protected ocean area with six First Nations, we banned oil tankers, and we are working to protect more ocean spaces.”

Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, I want to highlight that our government takes the protection of oceans and nature very seriously. Earlier this year, I was able to attend, with six first nations, the establishment of the Great Bear Sea national marine conservation area reserve, an area of 6,700 kilometres. We are in the process of establishing further ocean protections, many of which were announced just last week. The tanker ban remains in place. Our nature protections and ocean protections continue. In fact, we are only getting started.
