Climate Change

During question period, the NDP raised Canada’s climate record, citing the second-worst wildfire season in Canadian history, missed climate targets, and asking why the government plans to increase fossil fuel production rather than move away from it. The parliamentary secretary replied that she had spoken with the environment ministers of Colombia and the Netherlands ahead of the Santa Marta climate conference, that she could not attend because of the spring economic update but Canada’s top negotiator did, and that Canada was one of few oil-producing countries at the conference while continuing to work on climate action internationally.Written by AI from the debate. “Canada had one of its worst wildfire seasons, and we are missing our climate targets. Why is the government planning to produce more fossil fuels instead of moving away from them?”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, 2025 was the second-worst wildfire season in Canadian history, and Canadians are bracing for another devastating summer. Despite the growing climate crisis, Canada is missing its climate targets and running out of time. While more than 50 countries gathered in Colombia to discuss the transition away from fossil fuels, the Liberals did not even send a minister. Instead they came home with a plan to fast-track more fossil fuel extraction. At a time when communities are burning and families are being displaced, why is the Liberal government doubling down on fossil fuel extraction?

“I talked with the environment ministers from Colombia and the Netherlands before the Santa Marta climate conference. I could not go, but our top negotiator did. Canada was one of the few oil-producing countries there. We are still working to fight climate change around the world.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, I actually had the opportunity to speak with the minister of environment for Colombia and the minister of environment for the Netherlands in advance of the Santa Marta conference. They are the ones who organized it. I was unable to attend because I was here for the spring economic update, but our top negotiator was present for it. We were actually one of the few countries that produces conventional energy that was participating in this conference. We are continuing to be there, to fight climate change and to make sure we have an important role globally.
