Emergency Management

During question period on emergency management, a Liberal member asked about wildfire preparedness, citing wildfires in her riding, and asked for an update on preparations for the coming season. The minister replied that the government has signed contracts to lease 10 additional firefighting aircraft, through the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre, to support provinces and territories starting this wildfire season, and said the leasing companies are Canadian, in line with the government’s buy Canadian policy. “The government is spending $316 million to lease more firefighting planes. I want the minister to update us on how we are preparing for the next wildfire season.”

Mr. Speaker, wildfires do not wait for us to be ready. I am reminded of the wildfires in my riding of South Shore—St. Margarets. The government recognizes the need to work together as a nation to be prepared so that we can protect all Canadians. That is why the government has committed $316 million through budget 2025 to the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre to lease firefighting aircraft to establish a surge capacity. Can the Minister of Emergency Management and Community Resilience update the House on how we are better preparing for the upcoming wildfire season?

“We have signed deals to rent 10 more firefighting planes to help provinces and territories this year. All the planes come from Canadian companies to protect homes and save lives.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, that is exactly what we have delivered. Contracts are now in place to lease 10 additional wildfire aircraft that will support provinces and territories, starting this wildfire season. In line with our government’s buy Canadian policy, each of the companies leasing aircraft to CIFFC is a Canadian firm. This investment will protect lives, homes and communities for years to come.
