Natural Resources

During Question Period on natural resources, James Maloney asked the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources how the government plans to follow through on its election promise to connect Canada’s electricity grids from east to west, and to grow clean electricity capacity while keeping power reliable and affordable for families and businesses. Minister Tim Hodgson replied that a more connected east-west grid would strengthen the Canadian economy, energy security, and electrification opportunities, and said the government is seeking input from Canadians on its national plan for building better power lines.Written by AI from the debate. “We promised to connect Canada's power grids from east to west. I want the minister to explain how we will build this, grow clean power, and keep it reliable and affordable for families and businesses.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, during the last election, we committed to connecting Canada’s electricity grids from east to west rather than from north to south. Can the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources share with the House how we are going to build those interconnections, grow Canada’s clean electricity capacity and ensure families and businesses can decarbonize affordably and reliably?

“We need to connect Canada's power grid from east to west to help our economy and fight climate change. We are asking Canadians for their input on our plan to build better power lines.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, I would like to thank the member for his leadership on this issue. If we want to build one strong Canadian economy, strengthen our energy security and seize the economic opportunities of electrification, we need a more connected grid from east to west. This is why our national electricity strategy will refer the development of a new comprehensive transmission interconnect investment strategy to the Major Projects Office. This strategy will help grow our electricity grid and help us become more climate competitive. We have now launched a consultation period to hear from Canadians, and we look forward to working together to build the clean electricity backbone Canada needs for our future.
