Gender-Based Violence

During question period, members raised gender-based violence. Liberal member Linda Lapointe noted that ten femicides had occurred in Quebec so far that year and asked the Minister of Justice what reforms the government is making to help end violence against women. In reply, Liberal minister Sean Fraser pointed to Bill C-16, saying it would make reforms to the Criminal Code, including creating new offences for controlling conduct toward an intimate partner and for the killing of women, which he said would help the justice system protect victims.Written by AI from the debate. “Ten women have been killed in Quebec this year because of their gender. I want the Minister of Justice to tell us what laws the government is changing to stop violence against women.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, Quebec has already seen 10 femicides so far this year. Protecting women and victims is a top priority for Canadians across the country. Can the Minister of Justice tell us what reforms the government is making to help end gender-based violence?

“Our government is working to stop gender-based violence before it happens. This bill creates new crimes for controlling a partner and for killing women. These changes will help the justice system protect victims faster.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, I want to acknowledge all the work done by my colleague, the member for Rivière-des-Mille-Îles, as chair of the women’s caucus. Our government is working hard to prevent gender-based violence before it even happens. Bill C‑16 makes important reforms to the Criminal Code, particularly by creating new offences for femicide and coercive or controlling conduct. Together, these reforms will result in a justice system that responds earlier and faster and provides greater protection to victims of gender-based violence.
