Taxation

In question period, members debated the cost of diesel and gasoline. Conservatives argued Canadians pay more for diesel than Americans, that high fuel prices raise costs for farmers, truckers and families, and they asked the government to support their motion to cut diesel taxes, including suspending all diesel taxes until Canada Day. Government members replied that they had already cut the consumer carbon tax and paused the federal fuel excise tax, lowering pump prices, and cited a groceries and essentials benefit; one minister noted a bill (Bill C-38) to suspend the diesel and oil tax and invited opposition support. Some Liberal remarks also referenced Conservative internal party matters.Written by AI from the debate. Updated .

“Canada has plenty of oil, but Canadians still pay 24 cents more per litre for diesel than Americans. The government is making fuel too expensive. I want the Liberals to vote for our motion to lower fuel costs.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, we have the oil, we have the workers and we have the capacity, yet Canadians pay 24¢ per litre more for diesel than Americans do. The government keeps talking about making Canada stronger, while making Canadian energy more expensive for Canadians. A country with the fourth-largest oil reserves in the world should not be paying a premium to fuel itself. Will the Liberals vote for our Conservative motion to save Canadians money today, or will the Prime Minister keep making Canadians pay more?

“High fuel prices make everything cost more, including food. The Prime Minister should vote for our fuel relief plan today to lower costs for families.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, this Thanksgiving, the same family dinner costs 10% more than it did just a year ago. When diesel goes up, everything goes up. Farmers pay more to grow the food, truckers pay more to move it and families pay more at the till. The government says it wants to lower costs, but here is its chance. Will the Prime Minister vote for our emergency fuel relief plan today and drive costs down for families instead of giving empty promises and false prophecies?

“Canadians pay far too much for diesel, which hurts truckers, farmers, and families. The Conservatives have a plan to cut diesel taxes and refine more fuel in Canada. I want the government to support our plan.”

Mr. Speaker, Canada has the world’s fourth-largest proven oil reserves, yet Canadian truckers pay 24¢ more per litre for diesel than Americans do and 31¢ more than the global average. Diesel prices have surged nearly 80% in the past year, driving up costs for truckers, farmers and families. Our Conservative emergency fuel relief plan would cut diesel taxes today and refine more Canadian fuel here at home instead of relying on U.S. refineries. Will the Liberals support our Conservative plan to save Canadians money?

“High diesel prices make food, building, and goods cost more for Canadians. I want the Prime Minister to vote for our plan to cut all taxes on diesel until Canada Day.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, last week, hundreds of dump truck drivers hit the roads protesting the rising diesel prices. Diesel powers the trucks that move our goods, the equipment that builds our communities and the farms that put food on our tables. When diesel costs rise, Canadians pay more for everything. Today the Liberals have the opportunity to vote on a Conservative emergency fuel relief plan to cut all taxes on diesel until Canada Day and bring some relief during Thanksgiving. Will the Prime Minister listen to our truckers and finally give relief to Canadians?

“Farmers cannot afford high diesel costs. Our plan cuts taxes right away and speeds up energy projects. The Liberals should vote for our motion to help farmers.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, I would like to thank all of my colleagues on both sides of the House for their messages over the past few weeks. I would urge them to take care of themselves and their loved ones. The situation facing our farmers is unsustainable. Nick Majeau, a farmer in Quebec, told us that his diesel bill has doubled this year, and he is not alone. In a country with the world’s fourth-largest oil reserves, this is unacceptable. The Conservatives’ emergency relief plan would provide immediate tax relief and expedite approvals for energy infrastructure projects. For the past 11 years, the Liberal government has raised taxes and created more bureaucracy. Will the Liberals finally vote in favour of our diesel motion and help our farmers?
