Taxation

In question period, members debated the cost of diesel and gasoline. Conservatives argued Canadians pay more for diesel than Americans, that high fuel prices raise costs for farmers, truckers and families, and they asked the government to support their motion to cut diesel taxes, including suspending all diesel taxes until Canada Day. Government members replied that they had already cut the consumer carbon tax and paused the federal fuel excise tax, lowering pump prices, and cited a groceries and essentials benefit; one minister noted a bill (Bill C-38) to suspend the diesel and oil tax and invited opposition support. Some Liberal remarks also referenced Conservative internal party matters.Written by AI from the debate. Updated .

“Our government has already lowered gas prices by 25 cents a litre and is building new energy projects. The Conservatives should help us build the country instead of criticizing it.”

Mr. Speaker, Canadians can see through the cynicism on the other side of the aisle. The federal government has already reduced the price of gasoline by 25¢ a litre. We are building new energy infrastructure across this country. Rather than talk down Canada, why do the Conservatives not help us build the right Canada for the future?

Wayne Long, Secretary of State (Canada Revenue Agency and Financial Institutions)

Liberal
“The Conservatives are focused on their own internal drama. We are focused on making life more affordable for Canadians. Our benefit for groceries and essentials will lift 77,000 Canadians out of poverty.”

Mr. Speaker, while the other side focuses on caucus revolts, image reboots and finding the leader yet another riding to run in, we are focused on affordability for Canadians. The groceries and essentials benefit will lift 77,000 Canadians out of poverty. On this side of the House, we are going to deliver affordability measures for Canadians. The Conservatives can continue to vote against each and every one of them.

“Conservatives should support our plan to pause the fuel tax. We are helping Canadians by cutting fuel taxes and the consumer carbon tax at the pump.”

Mr. Speaker, maybe the Conservative Party would join with us in pausing the federal excise fuel tax, which will save Canadians 10¢ a litre when they fill up at the pump. We also cut the consumer carbon tax, saving Canadians 18¢ a litre when they fill up at the pump. The leader has been in the House for 7,600 days. He has produced nothing for Canadians. We are focused on affordability.

Jill McKnight, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence

Liberal
“We are working to lower costs for Canadians. Pausing the federal fuel tax cut gas prices by 10 cents a litre and diesel by four cents. We also just sent out money to help people buy groceries and basic needs.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, with the ongoing global conflicts and supply chain disruptions, we are focused on what we can control: bringing down costs for Canadians so they can get ahead. By suspending the federal fuel excise, we reduced costs by 10¢ per litre on gasoline and four cents on diesel. Lowering the price at the pump is one step to support Canadians, but let us also talk about the Canada groceries and essentials benefit that arrived in bank accounts this week, including in those of almost 1.5 million Canadians who live in British Columbia.

Daniel Gobeil, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food

Liberal
“I want the opposition to vote for this bill. It pauses the tax on diesel and oil. That helps workers and farmers, and it is a first step to making life more affordable.”

Mr. Speaker, I thank my colleague for his question. Our government has always been there to protect workers, farmers and employees across all sectors of the economy. That is precisely why we have introduced Bill C‑38, which would suspend the tax on diesel and oil. I invite our colleagues opposite to support this legislation, which represents a first step toward making life more affordable for Canadians.
