The Economy

During question period on the economy, Liberal members focused on affordability. Julie Dzerowicz asked how the government is helping families with rising costs driven by global events, and François-Philippe Champagne replied that the government has acted to make life more affordable, including extending the pause on the federal fuel tax. Kerry Diotte of the Conservatives cited a rash of meat thefts in Edmonton, attributing them to soft crime laws and high prices, and asked when the government would fix the economy. Gary Anandasangaree replied that the thefts are a matter for Edmonton police and invited the member to raise it with them.Written by AI from the debate. Updated .

Julie Dzerowicz, Davenport

Liberal
“Global problems are driving up costs, and families in my riding need help. I want the Minister of Finance to explain how the government is helping make life more affordable.”

Mr. Speaker, we live in an era where global events are having local impacts. Rising protectionism, energy shocks and supply chain disruptions are all converging to drive up costs. Families and workers in my constituency of Davenport are doing their best to navigate this rapidly changing world and are looking to the Canadian government to provide long-term economic vision and a bridge to the future. Can the Minister of Finance tell workers and families how our government is stepping up to help make their lives more affordable?

François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Finance and National Revenue

Liberal
“Our government has always worked to make life more affordable for Canadians. We recently extended the pause on the federal fuel tax to help them, and we will keep supporting them.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, I would like to thank my colleague for the great work she is doing for all of her constituents in Davenport. She really is an exceptional member of our team. She is right. This team, this government, and this Prime Minister have always been acting to make life more affordable for Canadians. One of the latest measures we announced was the extension of the suspension of the federal excise tax on fuel. This is going to help Canadians. Canadians know, and they are watching today, that we will have their backs. We are always going to be there for them. Every day is a good day to work for Canadians.

Kerry Diotte, Edmonton Griesbach

Conservative
“People are stealing meat in Edmonton and selling it on the black market. Liberal laws are too soft on crime, and Liberal spending has made prices too high. I want to know when the government will fix the economy.”

Mr. Speaker, a policeman told me there is a hot new meat market in Edmonton. It is not a trendy butcher shop. It is literally a “hot” meat market, as in stolen meat. There has been a rash of meat thefts. Brazen beef bandits fill shopping carts with the pricey stuff. They escape and sell the meat on the black market. After 11 years of Liberal soft-on-crime laws and government overspending that feeds inflation, this is Canada today. When will the Liberals stop butchering our economy and do something to get it back on track?

Gary Anandasangaree, Minister of Public Safety

Liberal
“This matter belongs to the Edmonton police. I want the member to take this up with them so the people responsible are held to account.”

Mr. Speaker, I appreciate the concern expressed by my friend. That matter is an issue of local jurisdiction for Edmonton police. I invite the member opposite to bring that up with Edmonton police to ensure that those who are responsible for this are held to account.
