Finance

During question period on finance, the Conservative leader said debt interest is the fastest-growing item in the federal budget and does not pay for services, putting figures of $6,000 per family of four today and $8,000 in four years, and asked the Prime Minister to appear at the finance committee. The Liberal minister replied that public debt charges are at about 1.7% of GDP, historically low compared with the 1990s, and said Canada has the strongest finances in the G7 and is using that position to help Canadians.Written by AI from the debate. Mr. Speaker, one would expect that after 20 years in this House, the Leader of the Opposition would read The Fiscal Monitor. If he took the time to read it, he would see that public debt charges are at 1.7%, one of the historical lows we have seen in Canada and well below the 6.5% in the 1990s. Canada has the strongest fiscal position in the G7. We are going to use that to build this country, help Canadians and defend our sovereignty. We are going to build Canada strong.
