Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship

A debate was held regarding a new government plan to allow European citizens to live, work, and study in Canada. Opposition members raised concerns that the Prime Minister shared the plan with the European Parliament before informing Canadians, and questioned how increased immigration would impact housing, healthcare, and jobs given current levels. In response, the government stated that Canada maintains control over its immigration system and emphasized that it is working on deeper transatlantic partnerships to ensure national independence.Written by AI from the debate. “The Prime Minister told the European Parliament about a new plan to let Europeans live, work, and study in Canada before telling Canadians. Our immigration numbers are already too high for our housing, health care, and jobs. I have three questions for him. How many people will come under this deal? Will they count in the immigration plan? How will this affect our hospitals, housing, and social services?”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, the Prime Minister told the European Parliament that people from the EU should be able to live, work and study in Canada. He said this in Europe before telling this Parliament or Canadians anything about it. The Prime Minister’s immigration levels are already outpacing our housing, our health care and our jobs, so I have three questions for him. How many more non-citizens will this new EU deal bring to Canada? Will they count in the levels plan? What will the impact be on our hospitals, housing and social services?
