The Economy

In Statements by Members, the House briefly discussed the economy. Eric Lefebvre (Conservative) cited a Parliamentary Budget Officer report projecting over $400 billion in added federal deficits by 2031, about $39 billion more than the government projected in the spring, along with weak growth this year and interest costs reaching $83 billion. He said deficits should stop and that Conservatives want to cut taxes and $150 billion in what they called wasteful spending. Conservative
“The budget officer says federal deficits will grow by over $400 billion by 2031, while economic growth stays weak. Interest on the debt will reach $83 billion. The government needs to stop running deficits. Conservatives want to cut taxes and cut $150 billion in wasteful spending instead.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, the Parliamentary Budget Officer sounded the alarm in her latest report. She is projecting that federal deficits will add over $400 billion by 2031, nearly $39 billion more than the Liberal government projected in the spring. Meanwhile, the economy grew by 0.9% this year. The Minister of Finance was delighted last week, but with growth expected to be 1.5% in 2027, what is there to be delighted about? Interest on the debt will reach $83 billion by the 2030-31 fiscal year. It is still being charged to the credit card of Canadian families. Canadians need an economy that produces more. They do not need mounting deficits. The Conservatives are proposing tax cuts and have a plan to save $150 billion by eliminating wasteful federal spending. It is time to put growth, affordability and fiscal responsibility back at the forefront.
