Marine Transportation

During question period on marine transportation, the NDP’s Gord Johns said that past Conservative and Liberal decisions on ferry tariffs sent shipbuilding jobs overseas, and asked the government to use the next budget to support building, repairing, and recycling ships in Canada, including at Port Alberni. Minister Steven MacKinnon replied that the government is interested in developing marine industries at Port Alberni, and said that BC Ferries is a provincial Crown corporation, with questions about it directed to British Columbia’s transportation minister.Written by AI from the debate. Gord Johns, Courtenay—Alberni

NDP
“Past Conservative and Liberal governments cut taxes on foreign-built ferries, which sent jobs overseas instead of helping Canadian shipyards. I want the government to use the next budget to help Canada build, repair, and recycle ships, including in Port Alberni, to create good union jobs.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, BC Ferries has parted ways with its CEO, but that will not build shipyards. Conservatives and Liberals blame BC Ferries for sending jobs overseas, but Ottawa shares responsibility. Conservatives eliminated the 25% tariff on foreign-built large ferries. Then the Liberals extended it to all ferries. That revenue could have built Canadian shipyards. BC Building Trades and the Build Them Here coalition demand action. Will the Liberal government commit in this budget to expand Canada’s capacity to build, repair and recycle ships, including in Port Alberni, creating good-paying union jobs?

Steven MacKinnon, Minister of Transport and Leader of the Government in the House of Commons

Liberal
“We want to help grow marine industries at Port Alberni. As for BC Ferries, it is run by the province. Questions about it should go to British Columbia's transportation minister.”

Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, as the member knows, we have spoken many times about the possibility of further developing those industries at Port Alberni. We are obviously very interested in that. As for BC Ferries, as the member well knows, that is a provincial Crown corporation that reports to the Minister of Transportation of British Columbia, and I think his questions for BC Ferries are best asked of that minister.
