Natural Resources

During question period on natural resources, the NDP asked whether the Prime Minister would keep his promise to uphold the oil tanker ban on British Columbia’s north coast, saying the Conservatives want to lift the ban and that this would put coastal communities and Indigenous livelihoods at risk while Canadians bear the financial risks of another pipeline. A Liberal minister responded that the Building Canada Strong Act would not change the duty to consult Indigenous peoples, describing the bill as creating a centralized Crown consultation hub meant to reduce red tape so Indigenous peoples spend more time in meaningful consultation. The two exchanges addressed different subjects.Written by AI from the debate. Updated .

“The Conservatives want to end the oil tanker ban on British Columbia's north coast. This puts coastal towns and Indigenous jobs at risk. I want the Prime Minister to promise today that he will protect the ban and keep his word.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, the Conservatives want to scrap B.C.’s north coast oil tanker ban, putting our coastal communities and indigenous livelihoods at risk. The Prime Minister has already promised to uphold the ban, yet Canadians are being asked to shoulder the financial risks of another costly pipeline. As the Prime Minister meets with first nations leaders and premiers, this is a moment to build trust, not break promises. Will the Prime Minister stand up today and unequivocally commit to protecting the north coast tanker ban, respecting indigenous rights and keeping his government’s promise?

Rebecca Alty, Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations

“This bill does not change our duty to consult Indigenous peoples. It creates one main office to handle consultations, which cuts down on government red tape. We cannot build a strong country without working with Indigenous peoples.”

Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, I want to be very clear. The building Canada strong act would not change the duty to consult. The bill proposes a centralized Crown consultation hub so that indigenous peoples can spend less time navigating government red tape and more time having meaningful conversations. Our government is focused on building Canada strong, and we cannot do that without indigenous peoples.
