National Defence

During question period on national defence, members discussed an incident at CFB Wainwright that killed four soldiers, hospitalized many others, and exposed numerous personnel to heavy smoke. James Bezan of the Conservatives asked whether the government would ensure all soldiers injured during their service receive the same long-term benefits, saying reservists are treated differently from regular members and some could slip through the cracks. Minister David McGuinty of the Liberals said twenty-seven Canadians remain in hospital, that support is being provided including surgical help and personnel from Ontario, and that the government would look into the benefits question and come back with an answer.Written by AI from the debate. “Soldiers hurt on duty do not all get the same long-term benefits because reservists are treated differently from regular members. Some may slip through the cracks. Will the government make sure every soldier injured during their service gets the same benefits?”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, the tragedy at CFB Wainwright took four precious lives, left 39 soldiers hospitalized and countless others exposed to heavy smoke. For many, their recoveries will not be quick. Some will have health challenges for the rest of their lives. Unfortunately, the long-term benefits are different between reserve force and regular force members based on their terms of service. This could result in one survivor receiving adequate support, while another slips through the cracks. Will the government ensure every soldier with an injury attributable to service receives the same benefits?

David McGuinty, Minister of National Defence

Liberal
“Twenty-seven Canadians are still in the hospital. We are giving them all the support we can, including surgical help and staff from Ontario. I ask all members to stand together to support them. We will look into the member's question and come back with an answer.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, there are 27 Canadians now still in the hospital. We are with them. We are providing all the support we can. We have brought in personnel from Ontario. We are providing surgical help. I would ask all members to stick together as we provide the support that they need. I take due note of the member’s question. We will look at it and come back with an answer.
