National Defence

During question period on national defence, members discussed an incident at CFB Wainwright that killed four soldiers, hospitalized many others, and exposed numerous personnel to heavy smoke. James Bezan of the Conservatives asked whether the government would ensure all soldiers injured during their service receive the same long-term benefits, saying reservists are treated differently from regular members and some could slip through the cracks. Minister David McGuinty of the Liberals said twenty-seven Canadians remain in hospital, that support is being provided including surgical help and personnel from Ontario, and that the government would look into the benefits question and come back with an answer.Written by AI from the debate. Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, there are 27 Canadians now still in the hospital. We are with them. We are providing all the support we can. We have brought in personnel from Ontario. We are providing surgical help. I would ask all members to stick together as we provide the support that they need. I take due note of the member’s question. We will look at it and come back with an answer.
