Chris Lewis, Essex
“Stellantis is laying off 6,000 auto workers in my riding again, even though the government gave the company over $6 billion. The government also failed to get a trade deal with the United States, spends billions on foreign aid, and allows subsidized Chinese electric cars to compete with ours. The next budget must protect Canadian auto workers, cut foreign aid, and stop letting in these Chinese vehicles.”
“Mr. Speaker, I rise on behalf of the 6,000 auto workers in Windsor-Essex at the Windsor assembly plant. Next week, these workers will be laid off by Stellantis, marking the fourth shutdown before Christmas. The Liberal government has handed more than $6 billion to Stellantis, yet these workers are still without work. The government is also spending billions in foreign aid abroad and opening our market to state-subsidized Chinese EVs that compete with our own vehicles. The Prime Minister promised a deal with the U.S. by 2025. Instead, families in Essex are losing faith because they are losing their jobs. No deal means no jobs. These workers are not asking for government handouts. They are asking to work and provide for their families. The Liberal budget should put Canadian workers first, reduce foreign aid spending, stop opening our market to state-subsidized Chinese vehicles and take action to prevent Canada’s auto industry from being hollowed out. Essex workers have paid the price for the government’s failures for far too long.”
