“This bill lets the government fine health tech companies that break the rules. I want to know how we will make sure those fines are big enough to actually stop them from blocking health data, instead of companies just treating the fines as a normal cost of business.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, the bill would give the government the power to establish administrative monetary penalties for health IT vendors that do not comply. I wonder what would stop these penalties from simply being another cost of doing business. How can we ensure that the penalties are strong enough to actually deter data blocking?

“I want to know how we will protect people's privacy while sharing health data. The government must promise to include the Privacy Commissioner when writing the rules and security standards for this bill.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, I wonder if the member could comment on how we can ensure that interoperability will not come at the expense of privacy and that the government commits to involving the Privacy Commissioner in developing the regulations and security standards under this legislation.
