“Algoma Steel in my riding signed a record deal to make steel for new ships, starting in 2027. This helps our workers after unfair American tariffs closed off the U.S. market. I want the minister to update us on how steelworkers in Sault Ste. Marie will benefit and help protect Canada's Arctic.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, this week Algoma Steel marked a major milestone deal with Seaspan Shipyards from beautiful B.C. This deal is a record-breaker for Sault Ste. Marie producer Algoma Steel in polar steel, and it is going to begin pouring the steel in 2027. This comes at a critical time, as the unjust, unfair tariffs from the Americans have virtually shut down the market. Can the Secretary of State for Defence Procurement please update the House on how the steelworkers in the Soo are going to benefit and how they are going to contribute to Canada’s Arctic sovereignty?

“Canada is one of the few countries that can design and build heavy and medium icebreakers. Canadian companies like Algoma Steel will supply the steel to build these ships. This strengthens our supply chains and keeps government spending in Canada.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, I want to thank the member from Sault Ste. Marie for his strong advocacy for all the hard-working steelworkers in his community. I do not know if the House knows this, but Canada is one of only a handful of nations that can design and build a heavy and medium-sized icebreaker. That is something we should all be very proud of. Our steel companies, like Algoma Steel, will now provide the steel we need to build these ships, strengthen our supply chains and keep more of our procurement dollars here in Canada.
