Health

In question period on health, the Conservatives asked about the COVID-19 vaccine injury support program, saying a contracted vendor was paid $54 million with much going to administration and only a small number of applicants helped, and asking when injured Canadians would receive compensation. The Liberal parliamentary secretary said the allegations against the previous vendor were unacceptable, that the government brought administration of the program in-house to ensure money is spent appropriately, and that the Public Health Agency has been directed to change the program so applicants get care.Written by AI from the debate. “People seriously hurt by the COVID-19 vaccine are not getting help. The company hired to help them took $54 million, spent most of it on office costs, and only helped 252 people. When will the victims get their money?”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, Canadians with documented, serious and permanent COVID-19 vaccine injuries have been waiting years for help. A government contractor was hired to provide that help. The government contractor got $54 million for little to no results. Two-thirds of that money went to administration and overhead. Only 252 out of tens of thousands of vaccine-injured people were given any help at all. On what day are the victims going to get their money?

“The company that used to run the vaccine injury program did unacceptable things. That is why the government took over running it. We want to make sure money is spent properly and that vulnerable people get care.”

Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, the allegations against the previous vendor for the vaccine injury program were absolutely unacceptable. That is why we made the administration of the program internal, to ensure money is spent appropriately. We have directed the Public Health Agency to alter the program to ensure all our dollars are spent correctly, and we look forward to working with members across the House to make sure vulnerable Canadians are looked after.
