Firearms

During Question Period, the topic of firearms came up, specifically the government’s ban on certain models of firearms and the amnesty period for owners to comply. Blaine Calkins of the Conservatives said the 2020 ban targeted law-abiding gun owners and has not reduced violent crime or gun smuggling, and he asked the Prime Minister to cancel it. Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree replied that extending the amnesty respects the judicial process and gives owners certainty, noting that over 142,000 firearms have been declared and owners are booking drop-off appointments, which he said supports community safety.Written by AI from the debate. “The government's gun ban has not stopped violent crime or gun smuggling. It costs too much and does not work. The Prime Minister should cancel it.”

Mr. Speaker, in 2020, the Liberals demonized law-abiding gun owners and banned over 2,500 models of firearms. Since then, violent crime and gun smuggling have only increased. Now the Supreme Court of Canada has slapped the Liberals’ wrists, extending their hard-line amnesty period on their ridiculous gun grab. Since the Prime Minister loves off-ramps so much, will he take this one and abandon this billion-dollar boondoggle that even his own public safety minister admits does not work?

“We extended the amnesty for banned guns to respect the court process and give owners more certainty. People have declared over 142,000 banned guns and are already booking times to hand them in. We are doing this to keep communities safe.”

Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, our government’s decision to extend the amnesty order respects the judicial process, and it provides greater certainty for firearms owners across Canada. To date, over 142,000 firearms have been declared, and firearms owners have already begun making appointments to drop off their prohibited weapons. We will keep working to keep communities across Canada safe.
