Democratic Institutions

Question period turned to reports of foreign interference targeting Alberta, with the NDP asking what the government is doing about reports that foreign actors are working with Alberta separatist movements and targeting Albertans’ personal data. The Liberal minister responding said she shared the concerns and urged Albertans to vote in the October 19 referendum to stay in Canada. The rest of the exchanges were procedural: Conservative members sought unanimous consent to table access-to-information records and the Prime Minister’s ethics disclosure, and were refused, and the Green member objected to heckling during the question.Written by AI from the debate. “Groups from the U.S. and Russia are targeting Albertans, stealing their data, and working to break up Canada. What is the government doing to stop this foreign interference?”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, the government has a responsibility to protect Canadians’ democracy and sovereignty. We now know that Republican operatives are working with Alberta separatists to break up our country. Albertans have also had their personal data stolen and are being targeted by extremist foreign actors from the U.S. and Russia. This is threatening public trust in our democratic institutions. What exactly is the government doing to stop foreign actors from interfering in our democratic processes and to protect Albertans and Canadians from these threats?

Mr. Speaker, I, too, am deeply disturbed by this reporting and I am concerned about the future of democracy as well. Alberta’s future belongs to Albertans, and so to Albertans watching, that is why it is so important to make our voices heard, to vote on October 19 and to vote decisively to remain in Canada.

“I want permission from the House to share government access to information records from the minister.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, on a point of order, I would like to seek unanimous consent in the House to table the ATIP documents from the minister— Some hon. members: No.

“Liberal members kept shouting the same heckle while an MP tried to ask a question. Please check the recording and remind everyone not to interrupt someone who is speaking.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, my point of order picks up from where the member for Berthier—Maskinongé left off. There was so much noise during question period. I particularly noted and want to object to the fact that when the hon. member for Edmonton Strathcona was trying to ask her question, there appeared to be a coordinated Liberal effort, because the same heckle was being used while she was trying to get her question in. Please listen to the tapes and see if we can remind our colleagues that they are not supposed to interrupt a member when they are speaking.

“I want permission from the House to present the Prime Minister's ethics disclosure document.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, during Oral Questions, the topic of the 91% of assets the Prime Minister has in the U.S. came up. I would like to table his ethics disclosure and seek unanimous— Some hon. members: No.
