The Budget

During Members’ Statements, Dan Muys (Conservative) spoke against the federal budget, saying it lacked a credible fiscal anchor, a path to a balanced budget, and a full accounting of government borrowing. He said debt interest this year would cost over $60 billion, more than spending on health care or defence, and argued that borrowing would raise interest rates and taxes, increasing costs for people in his riding.Written by AI from the debate. “I do not support this budget. It adds too much debt and has no plan to balance spending. Canada will spend over $60 billion just on debt interest this year, which is more than it spends on health care or defence. All this borrowing will raise interest rates and taxes, making life cost more for people in my community.”
Official Hansard

Mr. Speaker, Canadians expect their government to manage public finances responsibly. That means a credible fiscal anchor to bring debt under control, a path to a balanced budget and a full accounting of government borrowing. This costly credit card budget falls well short. Federal debt continues to rise with no plan to balance the overall budget. Debt interest will cost Canadians more than $60 billion this year, more than health care and more than national defence. CPP contributions are there to support Canadians’ retirement. They should never be used as permission for Ottawa to borrow more. The $765 billion more in debt piled on in this budget will ultimately drive up interest rates and taxes. For people in Waterdown, Paris and Binbrook in my area, this costly credit card budget means higher mortgage payments and higher car payments, the very last thing they can afford.
