Justice

During question period on justice, a Conservative member raised home invasions and introduced a bill that would make home invasion its own criminal offence, with a minimum of five years in prison and up to life. He asked the government to support the bill, saying families should feel safe in their homes. The Liberal parliamentary secretary said keeping Canadians safe is a priority, noted the government passed six bills last year addressing home invasions and break-and-enters, and said more work remains and the government wants to work with other parties on the issue.Written by AI from the debate. “I want the government to support my bill. It makes home invasion its own crime, with prison time of at least five years and up to life. People should feel safe in their homes.”

Mr. Speaker, a violent home invasion does not end when the intruders leave. Families are left lying awake fearing every noise and wondering whether it will happen again. Today, I introduced a bill to keep Canadians safe in their homes. This bill would create a distinct home invasion offence, establish a five-year mandatory minimum sentence and carry with it a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. Canadians deserve to feel safe behind their own front doors. Will the minister and the Liberal government support my bill and help ensure Canadians can feel safe in the comfort of their own homes?

“Keeping Canadians safe is very important. We have worked hard to stop home invasions and break-ins, and we passed six bills on this last year. We still have more to do, and we want to work with other parties on it.”

Mr. Speaker, it is very important that we ensure the safety of Canadians. We have been working hard since being elected as a new government to work on these issues, including home invasions and break and enters. That is why we introduced six different bills last year alone that have passed through this House. There is more work to do, and we look forward to collaborating with other parties on it.
