Labour

Question period discussion on labour rights and section 107 of the Canada Labour Code, which lets the labour minister intervene in industrial disputes. The NDP, marking International Workers’ Day, said the government has repeatedly used section 107 to end strikes and called on it to pass a bill repealing that section. The Liberal government replied that the section is used only in extreme cases when other options are exhausted, noting that most labour disputes are settled without work stoppages, and said it is seeking public input online on the future of labour laws.Written by AI from the debate. “Today is International Workers' Day. The government keeps stopping workers from striking to help big bosses. I want the government to pass this bill to stop the labour minister from ending strikes.”

Madam Speaker, today is International Workers’ Day. It is a day when we honour workers’ struggles for economic justice and human rights. Yet, the Liberals repeatedly use section 107 of the Canada Labour Code to trample over the right to strike. They cave to CEOs and their corporate buddies and undermine fair and collective bargaining. Will the government finally respect workers, defend their rights and pass Bill C-247 to repeal section 107 of the Canada Labour Code?

“The government only steps into labour disputes as a last resort, and almost all disputes are settled without a strike. We are asking people for their input online about the future of our labour laws, and I invite everyone to take part.”
Official Hansard

Madam Speaker, we believe firmly that section 107 is used only in extreme cases when other options have been exhausted. Just last year, for example, a federal mediator supported over 200 collective bargaining negotiations, and 97% of labour disputes are resolved without a major work stoppage. We have a consultation right now on the future of the federal Labour Code. I would invite the member, her colleagues and her constituents to please go online and participate in that as we look ahead down the road.
