Conservatives criticized the Liberals for increasing taxes, debt, credit card spending and regulations over 11 years in power. They said the chief economist of National Bank reported the Liberals imposed over 320,000 regulatory requirements on Canadian businesses. Conservatives also blamed factory closures since January on the Liberals. Liberals said they were working to streamline government structure and reduce regulations between Quebec and Ottawa. They blamed difficulties for Canadian businesses on excessive American tariffs.
