Silver Alert National Framework Act

A bill to set up a national 'silver alert' system to help find missing vulnerable seniors, especially those with dementia. The MP behind the bill, a Conservative, spoke mostly to the bill itself and how it could help, comparing it both to existing alerts in some provinces and to the more extensive U.S. system. She expressed openness to amendments. Other members from all the main parties were quick to congratulate her and each other just for introducing the bill and talking about it -- they used over half their speaking time for mutual appreciation and other unrelated topics they found meaningful.

“I'm proposing a new law to help find missing seniors with dementia. It's a sad issue, but we can do something about it. We need to act now before more people die.”

“The bill is great as is, but I'm open to changes if others want to propose them. I just don't want to water it down to something symbolic. We want real change. The federal government can and should lead on this by bringing everyone together.”

“I'm asking for a new national standard because the existing frameworks in Manitoba and Quebec don't go far enough. Police and social media alerts are not enough. I want silver alerts to go directly to people's phones, like Amber alerts and tornado warnings do. That way, even people who aren't actively paying attention will get notified when a senior goes missing. The current systems aren't good enough because they don't push alerts right to everyone's devices. I want to fix that.”

“This bill could make a real difference. We need to alert people across the country when seniors go missing, not just in one community. A national system would help everyone, whether they live in rural areas, Manitoba, or the territories. Has any jurisdiction made this work electronically?”

“The U.S. system is really good. They have billboards and phone alerts. This bill will do research and get experts to help provinces set up their own systems.”

“I'm full of empty words but I can't say anything substantive because my party hasn't decided yet. All I can do is fill time with anecdotes, empty platitudes and emotional appeals until they give me my talking points.”
